The Hedgehog

31 Mar 2015

Ranger Rom Hi Guys!

They called hedgehogs as they love to forage around hedges to find insects, snails, slugs, frogs, mushrooms and even birds eggs that they can eat. They are omnivores since they eat plants and animals.

Hedgehogs have sharp spines, and when they feel threatened, will curl up into a spiny ball. Their main predator in the African Savannah, is the Spotted eagle owl. If they feel threatened, you can hear them make a high pitched screech sound as they roll into a ball.

During the winter months, food is scarce, and so the hedgehog will enter a state of Torpor. So the best time to go looking for these cute creatures of the wild is in the spring and summer months!

Torpor is a state of decreased physiological activity in an animal, usually by a reduced body temperature and lower metabolism. This enables animals to survive periods of reduced food availability. It is not the same as hibernation, but similar!
